Title

Japanese Language Reviewer / Evaluator for Named Entity Recognition (NER)

Description

We are looking for a freelance Japanese language reviewer to help us evaluate the quality of Japanese Named Entity Recognition (NER) technology.

Our system automatically identifies named entities in text, such as person names, organizations, locations, products, and other proper names. We need a native-level Japanese reviewer with strong language judgment to review system output, identify errors, and provide structured feedback.

This is not a translation task. It is an evaluation and linguistic review task focused on Japanese-language text and annotation quality.

What you will do

  • Review Japanese text together with Entity (NER) annotations produced by our system
  • Check whether named entities have been identified correctly
  • Provide clear written feedback on recurring error patterns
  • Mark false positives, missed entities, boundary errors, and label/type errors
  • Flag ambiguous or difficult cases and explain your reasoning

Examples of issues you may review

  • A person name not detected as a person
  • Part of an organization name tagged, but not the full span
  • A common noun incorrectly tagged as a named entity
  • A location tagged as an organization
  • Incorrect handling of Japanese company names, foreign names, titles, or product names

Requirements

  • Native or near-native proficiency in Japanese
  • Strong reading comprehension and writing skills in Japanese
  • Ability to follow annotation guidelines consistently
  • Ability to explain language judgments clearly in English
  • Prior experience in linguistics, localization, annotation, QA, NLP evaluation, or related work is a plus

Nice to have

  • Experience with named entity annotation, corpus annotation, or NLP data review
  • Background in linguistics, computational linguistics, translation, localization, or language QA
  • Familiarity with Japanese news, business, and general-domain text

Project format

  • Freelance / remote
  • We will provide the data, guidelines, and review format
  • Initial paid test task, followed by additional work if the collaboration goes well
  • Hourly or fixed-price arrangements can be discussed depending on experience and availability

When applying, please include

  1. A short summary of your background relevant to Japanese language review or annotation
  2. Any experience with linguistic QA, annotation, NLP, search, or localization
  3. Your hourly rate
  4. Your availability over the next few weeks
  5. A brief answer to this question: what kinds of errors do you expect to see in Japanese NER output?

We are looking for someone careful, consistent, and linguistically sharp rather than someone who simply reads Japanese fluently.
